Sulfate Formation in Sea-Salt Aerosols: Constraints from Oxygen Isotopes
[1] We use observations of the mass-independent oxygen isotopic composition (DO) of sulfate in the marine boundary layer (MBL) to quantify the sulfate source from aqueous SO2 (S(IV)) oxidation by O3 in alkaline sea-salt aerosols. Oxidation by O3 imparts a large DO signature to the resulting sulfate (8.8%) relative to oxidation by H2O2 (0.9%) or by OH or O2 (0%). Ship data from two Indian Ocean ...
متن کاملIdentification and Characterization of a Novel Salt-Tolerant Esterase from the Deep-Sea Sediment of the South China Sea
Marine esterases play an important role in marine organic carbon degradation and cycling. Halotolerant esterases from the sea may have good potentials in industrial processes requiring high salts. Although a large number of marine esterases have been characterized, reports on halotolerant esterases are only a few. Here, a fosmid library containing 7,200 clones was constructed from a deep-sea se...

متن کاملSalt gland secretion in the pelagic sea snake Pelamis.
DUNSON, !%kSAM A. Salt ghnd secretion in tha pelagic sea snake (Pelclmis). Am. J. Physiol. 2 15(6) : 1512-l 517. 1968.---The pelagic sea snake Pehmis plnturus was examined for the presence of a functional salt gland. After salt loading, a solution highly concentrated in NaCl was collected from the tip of the mouth. The maximum rate of extracloacal NaCl excretion was about 200 pmoles/ 100 g per ...
